9 Feb 2007 - "Eagle Peak" (North Peak)
Climbers: Nate Jensen and Dave Gibson
Trailhead: Goat Camp Creek
Elevation gain: 1893 feet
I've climbed "Eagle Peak" many times, but never before in the
dark. My goal was to reach the summit and take some pictures as the dawn
was breaking. Nate and I took off from the Goat Camp Creek trailhead at
about 5:30 am wearing our head lamps. The snow-covered trail was in good
shape for climbing with no icy spots. It took us a little over an hour to
reach the summit. As we arrived on top, the eastern sky was already
beginning to lighten. We climbed onto the rocks just east of the main
overlook area for an unobscured view to the east. There I set up my tripod
and began taking tons of pictures with my tiny Cannon PowerShot SD400 (clearly
not the best tool for the job). As usual, I was disappointed with the
results, but some of the better pictures are above. Before the sky
brightened very much I called my office and talked with Bill. From the
window outside our front office, he was able to see Nate and me flashing our
head lamps on the summit. From the summit, Nate and I were able to see Rob
flashing a small flashlight from the office window. That was a fun little
experiment. After enjoying the beautiful sunrise, Nate and I headed back
down and made it in to work only a little later than usual.
